Strawberry DNA Extraction Lab

This is probably one of our new favorite experiments! To show Harry that DNA is in all living things, we did a very simple experiment to extract the DNA from strawberries. Harry was completely blown away by this! It was so cool too!!

Materials:
 2 strawberries
2/3 cup water
1 tablespoon dish soap
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons rubbing alcohol (refrigerate first)
Strainer, cotton balls, bowl, cups, bags, forks

What to do:
1. Combine water, soap, and salt in a bowl. Mix well.
2. Put strawberries in a zip lock bag. Add the soap, water, and salt mixture.
3. Mash until foamy.
4. Pour the mixture through a strainer into a new container/bowl.
5. Pour the rubbing alcohol into the container. Wait 2 minutes.
6. Use a fork or cotton ball to lightly skim the top of the mixture and extract the DNA.

SO AWESOME!!!!!
