Why do leaves change color?

Why do leaves change color??

This is one of Harry's favorite experiments. Leaves change color when the chlorophyll is stripped from them.

To do this, you can soak green in rubbing alcohol. By the soaking them in rubbing alcohol, you are extracting the chlorophyll to make the leaves change colors.

Soak the leaves in rubbing alcohol for about 40 minutes. Then, dip a coffee filter in it to find out what color the leaves will turn.

Here's a look at what we did...

The Glowing Egg Experiment!

This experiment is ridiculously awesome!!! Want to make an egg glow and bounce??? Read below.

Harry and I soaked an egg in a glass of vinegar (12oz) for 24 hours. Keep the glass on a table or counter. Once the 24 hours is up, pour out the vinegar, and put the egg into a new bowl.

The vinegar is an acid which reacts with the egg shell. The calcium carbonate in the egg shell dissolves in the vinegar. The membrane inside the shell remains intact, which makes the egg feel rubbery and squishy like a bouncy ball.

The egg will also glows when you shine a flashlight on it now!!

We had a lot of fun bouncing the egg, squishing it, and making it glow. Definitely a must try experiment!

How do you clean pennies?!?!

How can you clean pennies??

We tried 3 different ways to clean pennies!
1. Water
2. Water w/soap
3. Vinegar w/salt

We placed 3 pennies in each glass and left them in there for about 10 minutes. To Harry's surprise, the vinegar and salt mixture cleaned the pennies the best! :)

Fourth of July Crafts and Activities

I did tons of patriotic crafts and activities for the Fourth of July with Harry! He loves flags, so it was fun! We do similar things like this every year too. I also found some worksheets on Google, and we made patriotic cookies!
