Why do pinecones open and close? We did an experiment to determine why! We placed a pinecone in cold water, hot water, and an empty glass. Harry and I discovered that pinecones close faster in cold water. They change with the humidity. Therefore, when it is damp, pinecones will close. When it is dry, pinecones will open, or take longer to close!
